Rhian Field Art
My late Father taught me to draw and observe my surroundings as a child, and I began painting in oils later in career, after he died in 2006. I am Tenby-born and Pembrokeshire-bred, with a Coastal and Marine science degree and recent Doctoral degree in Geography (Arts) which explored art-science and climate change, obtained at Aberystwyth University.
Exhibitions of my work have included Artist in Residence at Oriel Y Parc, St Davids, The National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff, the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven and the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. I have collaborated with several organisations including PCNPA and the RSPB.
My style of oil painting is best described as expressionist and representative of the subject, which includes animals of our local coastal environment such as the Grey Seal, jellyfish, octopus, diving birds and kelp. I aim to capture the light and movement that are critical to our natural world and life-forms within the North Atlantic Ocean.
I paint each piece of work all at once, a technique also known as ‘alla prima’, once I have imagined myself within the underwater scene looking up through the depths towards the light at the surface.
